Matters & conflict checks
Search matters and participants, check matter status, review parties and client details, run conflict checks — without leaving the conversation.
Ask questions, take action, record time and costs, and draft documents — all from a natural conversation with Claude, Microsoft Copilot, or the Word & Excel add-ins, connected directly to the Actionstep platform your firm runs on. Front office to back — matters, workflows, time, billing.
Built on the platform trusted by 5,000+ law firms. Actionstep is the modern, adaptable law firm management platform for midsize firms — practice management and legal accounting in one. LegalStep.ai connects your AI tools to all of it, through Actionstep's supported APIs.
Everything Actionstep organises — matters, workflows, time, billing, documents — becomes something your team can simply ask for. Each tool is named, and each one is allowed to do exactly one kind of thing.
Search matters and participants, check matter status, review parties and client details, run conflict checks — without leaving the conversation.
Disbursements, unbilled time by fee earner, open matters, a WIP check across every file before invoicing — landed in Excel as a ready-to-work table. Time can be asked for across matters, not just one at a time. The oversight partners want, without waiting for month-end.
In Word, address letters, populate client details and draft paragraphs using real-time matter data — document drafting without the manual lift, or the copy-paste errors.
Open new matters, add parties, create file notes and fill in custom data fields like key dates — then keep the work moving: create, complete or reassign tasks, and advance a matter to its next workflow step, with requirements checked first.
Record billable time and disbursements the moment the work happens, check billing settings and rates, and see each invoice's total, paid and outstanding amounts — feeding Actionstep's billing and legal accounting, not a side spreadsheet. Every rate and amount reported is the one Actionstep stored on the entry, never a figure derived from a rate card.
See what's in the diary — by matter, date range, or calendar — and book, reschedule, update or cancel appointments in conversation, timed or all-day, and optionally linked to a matter.
Ask for one of your firm's Actionstep templates on a matter, and the assistant fills every merge field it can from that matter's data, then files the finished Word document back onto the matter — your precedent step, done in conversation. Blank fields are flagged so nothing goes out half-filled.
Delete a task, time entry, disbursement, appointment, custom-data row, participant role or file note when it shouldn't be there. One record per request, never in bulk — and the assistant reads the record back and tells you exactly what it's about to destroy before it does.
A secure, dedicated server per firm, built on Actionstep's supported APIs. Access runs on your existing credentials — nothing happens your login couldn't do.
The hesitation with AI in a law firm isn't capability — it's control. Every action runs under the person's own Actionstep login, and the server keeps the record to match. So a firm can put AI to work and still answer "who did this?"
Each user signs in as themselves, so time entries, notes, matters and appointments are recorded under their own name in Actionstep — never a shared account.
The server privately records every request it handles — who, which action, when, and whether it succeeded — using privacy-safe summaries only. Never document contents, never client data.
One record per request — no lists, no filters, no "delete all of these". Every deletion reads the record back first and names what it's about to destroy, and refuses outright if it doesn't belong to the matter you named. Matters, contacts, bills, emails, workflow steps and documents can't be deleted at all.
Every rate and dollar amount reported for a time entry is the one Actionstep stored on that entry — a rate card is never used to work one out, because the card price often isn't what an individual fee earner charges. Where an amount can't be resolved, the entry is excluded from the total and the total says so, rather than a plausible figure being filled in.
Administrators can ask "who looked up contact details last week?" and get a clear, per-person summary — oversight without a spreadsheet.
If someone runs an unusually high volume of contact lookups, your administrators are emailed automatically — a guard against bulk data harvesting. It alerts; it never blocks normal work.
